Obituary for Nicholas Howard Fitzgerald Jr.

Nick Fitzgerald Jr. (1935-2020)

Nicholas H. Fitzgerald, Jr. of Centerville, formerly of Winchester, passed away peacefully on July 29, 2020. Born in Boston, MA in 1935 he graduated from Winchester High School with the class of 1953, and went on to receive a bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering from Tufts University in 1957. He proudly served his nation in the Army Reserves for four years.

Nick had a successful forty-year career with several Boston-area engineering, and construction firms, with projects spanning the range from public infrastructure through corporate headquarters construction. To all of his work, he brought a keen intellect and meticulous attention to detail for which he earned great respect within his profession.

As a civic minded person, he was an active Winchester Town Meeting Member, and served as the Town of Winchester’s Disaster Coordinator. He was known as a very helpful neighbor and took great pride in tending to his showcase lawn, for the benefit of everyone.

He enjoyed participating in sports, especially basketball, drum majoring, fishing and skiing and won accolades for his track performance. He was certainly an avid Patriots fan, but cheering at his own childrens’ sporting events took precedence. Nick relished regular trips to Atlantic City and Las Vegas, and might well have been the biggest low stakes slot machine player on the east coast! Throughout his lifetime, “Captain Nick” always found great joy on or near the ocean.

Most of all, Nick loved his family. He worked tirelessly and imbued his children with high standards and intellectual curiosity, for which they have lasting gratitude. His devotion to his surviving sister Alice endured to his final days. A dedicated friend, his strong character, honesty, loyalty and gentle wit will be remembered by all. Nick was especially thankful for his Catholic parish community in Centerville.

Nick is survived by his sister, Alice Fitzgerald of Wakefield, the mother of his children, Gloria Doughty of Maine, and his four children: Leanne (Lenny) Velichansky of Medfield; Nicholas (Jennifer) H. Fitzgerald, III of Fort Collins, CO; Darcy (Robert) Biltekoff of Buffalo, NY; and Sharon (Steve DeCosse) Fitzgerald of Sebastopol, CA. He was the dear grandfather of seven grandchildren. As well, he will be fondly remembered by his long time companion, Mildred Nicastro of New Jersey.
