Nick Fitzgerald Jr. (1935-2020)

Nicholas H. Fitzgerald, Jr. of Centerville, formerly of Winchester, passed away peacefully on July 29, 2020. Born in Boston, MA in 1935 he graduated from Winchester High School with the class of 1953, and went on to receive a bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering from Tufts University in 1957. He proudly served his nation in the Army Reserves for four years.

Nick had a successful forty-year career with several Boston-area engineering, and construction firms, with projects spanning the range from public infrastructure through corporate headquarters construction. To all of his work, he brought a keen intellect and meticulous attention to detail for which he earned great respect within his profession.

As a civic minded person, he was an active Winchester Town Meeting Member, and served as the Town of Winchester’s Disaster Coordinator. He was known as a very helpful neighbor and took great pride in tending to his showcase lawn, for the benefit of everyone.

He enjoyed participating in sports, especially basketball, drum majoring, fishing and skiing and won accolades for his track performance. He was certainly an avid Patriots fan, but cheering at his own childrens’ sporting events took precedence. Nick relished regular trips to Atlantic City and Las Vegas, and might well have been the biggest low stakes slot machine player on the east coast! Throughout his lifetime, “Captain Nick” always found great joy on or near the ocean.

Most of all, Nick loved his family. He worked tirelessly and imbued his children with high standards and intellectual curiosity, for which they have lasting gratitude. His devotion to his surviving sister Alice endured to his final days. A dedicated friend, his strong character, honesty, loyalty and gentle wit will be remembered by all. Nick was especially thankful for his Catholic parish community in Centerville.

Nick is survived by his sister, Alice Fitzgerald of Wakefield, the mother of his children, Gloria Doughty of Maine, and his four children: Leanne (Lenny) Velichansky of Medfield; Nicholas (Jennifer) H. Fitzgerald, III of Fort Collins, CO; Darcy (Robert) Biltekoff of Buffalo, NY; and Sharon (Steve DeCosse) Fitzgerald of Sebastopol, CA. He was the dear grandfather of seven grandchildren. As well, he will be fondly remembered by his long time companion, Mildred Nicastro of New Jersey.

A Mass of Christian Burial has been scheduled for Tuesday, August 4th at Our Lady of Victory Parish, 230 S. Main St., Centerville at 11am. All are invited to attend in person; however, a livestream of the service will be available at Relatives and friends are also invited to attend a visitation on Wednesday, August 5th at the Lane Funeral Home, 760 Main St. Winchester from 10-11am and a graveside service at Calvary Cemetery, Winchester at 11:30am. It was through my grade school friendship with Leanne that we brought our parents together. I am so grateful for all of the years they shared together full of laughter and great memories! You are all in my thoughts and prayers.

Dad Fitz,
There are dozens of fond memories over the past 4 decades...but some of my favorites are:
Showing up on your doorstep in Cape Cod at midnight in a storm bc my flight was canceled-I was pregnant with Nicky John-it only took you 10 seconds to recognize me and you let me in!
You searching high and low for a Dunkin Donuts cream-filled powdered donut for me(they always had your Butter Crunch!)
Taking us to Cooke's restaurant
Dozens of boat rides with Captain Nick
Taking Kate Whale-watching
Going to the beach
Driving to York, PA for my Mom's funeral
Calling me on Saturday mornings just to let me know how beautiful the sky was at the Cape

You were and will remain a beacon of integrity and authenticity. Thanks for showing us how it's done, Dad Fitz. It's been an honor and privilege to know and love you. Your legacy lives on in your wonderful children and grandchildren. You are greatly missed.

Honestly, it still hasn’t hit me yet that I’ve lost my Grandfather. It probably won’t be able to fully register with me due to the state of the world at the present moment. It’s been a difficult year to say the least. There’s been hard times and tragedy, and a whole lot of distance between family that all of us wish we could close. It’s hard to pick one particular memory that sums up my relationship with him. However, there was never a moment I wasn’t inspired by the man. He was stubborn, smart, creative, and full of love. I never once had a dull conversation, and it didn’t matter how small of an achievement I would share, each was met with enthusiasm and pride. I am lucky enough to carry his name, just as my father proudly does, and he will forever be a defining factor in the man I am today.
