Kuo-Ting (Ken) Hung
On Thursday, August 12, 2021, Kuo-Ting (Ken) Hung, a loving husband and devoted father of two, passed away unexpectedly at the age of 50 after a courageous 5-year battle with cancer.
Ken was born on October 12, 1970 in Taiwan. He spent 7 years in Singapore, where he attended middle and high school. Ken then attended the University of Michigan, receiving a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, three Master of Science degrees (Financial Engineering, Electrical Engineering, and Industrial and Operations Engineering) and a PhD in Industrial and Operations Engineering.
An esteemed instructor and widely published researcher and author, Ken was faculty for 18 years at Suffolk University, most recently as chair of the Sawyer Business School’s Department of Information Systems and Operations Management, and director of the Master of Science in Business Analytics Program. He was a deeply caring, humble and kind colleague and professor, often working behind the scenes to tap his industry connections to aid students in their job searches. Over the course of his career, he taught more than 2,000 students in close to 150 different sections of courses, providing honest and useful guidance, even counseling his international students on acclimation to U.S. customs.
Ken met Chia-Lin (Elly) Huang in Boston in 2004, drawn to one another’s curiosity, intelligence and shared desire for adventures, and they were married in 2008. In his younger years, Ken enjoyed Tai Kwon Do, scuba diving (even trying night diving), skydiving, taking road trips to various U.S. national parks, and tasting whiskeys from around the world. After their children were born, Ken shared his adventurous side with his sons, leading them on hiking trips, camping adventures, and roller coaster rides – never letting the toll from his cancer treatments keep him from making memories with his family.
Throughout his journey with cancer, Ken remained positive and demonstrated incredible strength when faced with each new development or round of treatments. He was determined to enjoy every moment with his wife and children, who loved him dearly and supported him day in and day out.
Ken was very open minded about the world and the nuances of global living, having lived in three different countries. He believed deeply in helping others by sharing what you have, regularly making donations to various national and international charities, and encouraging his children to participate in the process.
Ken is survived by his wife, Chia-Lin (Elly) Huang, and their two young sons, Derek and Victor Hung, as well as his parents, Ming-Chia Hung and Bi-Ju Chang, and his sister Chin-Ya Hung.
Friends and colleagues are respectfully invited to a Celebration of Life on Sunday, August 22 from 1-4 pm in the Lane Funeral Home, 760 Main Street, Winchester, MA 01890. Donations may be made in Ken’s memory to:
