Obituary for Joseph Abate

Joseph Abate, MD died in his home surrounded by family in Winchester, MA on December 19, 2020 due to complications from cancer. He was 83. Dr. Abate was born on January 28, 1937 in Medford, MA to Carmen and Frances Abate. He graduated from Tufts University in 1958 and Tufts Medical School in 1962. He wed Maureen Corkery in 1962.

Dr. Abate was devoted to his large and loving family. He was survived by his wife of 58 years, Maureen, his four children and their spouses, Maura Abate and John Welch of Marblehead, MA; Beth Abate Bacon and Daniel Bacon of Bainbridge Island, WA; Joseph C. Abate and Michele Hylemon Abate of Winchester, MA; and Gregory Abate and Kathy Kent Abate of Hollis, NH. Dr. Abate was a proud and supportive grandfather of ten: Liam Welch, Sean Welch, Fiona Welch, Arthur Bacon, Henry Bacon, Annie Abate, William Abate, Megan Abate, Emma Abate, and Margaret Abate. Dr. Abate is also survived by his sister Lucille Abate Lyons of Billerica, MA and his brother Peter Abate of Westford, MA.

A dedicated and thoughtful physician, Dr. Abate was a founding partner in North Suburban Orthopaedic Associates. For more than 50 years, he derived joy from meeting with and healing patients in his Malden, Melrose, and Everett offices. In 2017, he was named Orthopaedist of the Year by the Massachusetts Orthopaedic Association. Dr. Abate held leadership roles in the Friends of the Whidden Memorial Hospital Coalition, was a founder of Metropolitan Bank, and served as a trustee of the Cummings Foundation.
