Obituary for Isabel J "Liz" Bruce (DeSarno)

Liz Bruce passed away from liver cancer on July 27, 2021.

“A creative life is an amplified life. It’s a bigger life, a happier life, an expanded life, and a hell of a lot more interesting life. Living in this manner ----continually and stubbornly bringing forth the jewels that are hidden within you—is a fine art, in and of itself.”
Excerpt from Elizabeth Gilbert, Big Magic

Liz Bruce, born April 30, 1942 in Belmont, Massachusetts, began teaching dance at 13 to pay for her dance lessons. She received a BA in Theatre Education from Emerson College in 1963. She taught English Speech and Theatre at Gloucester High School. From 1964 to 1976 she was a Freelance Director and Choreographer; founded and ran Bruce’s Dance and Drama Workshop from 1968 to 1972; and was owner and operator of Libra Productions with Ruth Avergon from 1972 to 1976. Over the span of her career, Liz directed, choreographed, performed in and produced over 100 shows earning numerous awards and accolades.

Liz owned and managed Pequossette Insurance Agency in Belmont, Massachusetts from 1976 to 2016.

At the age of 68 she earned a Masters Degree in Counseling Psychology at Framingham State University.

Liz was known to have said that she did everything in her lifetime that she ever wanted. She was full of energy, always exploring a new hobby or looking for another skill to learn or teach. Besides teaching, directing, choreographing, acting, coaching, sculpting, and photography….she read tarot cards.

Liz loved to entertain in her beautiful home and was skilled at putting people together to create an interesting evening after a fabulous dinner. Although she literally traveled all over the world, some of her favorite spots were Disney World—for the magic and adventure; Las Vegas—for the shows of course; and Africa.

Liz volunteered for DEAF, Inc. and Massachusetts Commission for the Blind for over 20 years. She and her Canine Care certified dogs (Alex and Max) cheered hearts while visiting nursing homes and hospitals.

Liz is survived by her significant other, Clint Ackerman; her brother, C. David DeSarno; three nephews: Michael, Stephen, and Mark; cousins, Isobel Allen, Mary Lou Cucinotta, Jean Henry; and countless friends.

Donations in her honor can be made to Emerson College, Liz DeSarno Bruce Scholarship Fund, 120 Boylston Street Boston, MA 02110.
