Obituary for Gordon W Grant
Gordon W. Grant, of Winchester, MA and Shapleigh, ME, passed away on May 4 after a long battle with Parkinson's Disease. He was 83 years old. Gordon was the beloved husband of Donna Grant (McCormack) of Lexington, with whom he shared more than 60 years of marriage. He was the devoted father of Kimberly Grant (Mike Burton) of Victoria, British Columbia and Kristen Haskell (Troy) of Lovell, ME. Gordon is also survived by his brothers Scott, Clyde (Catherine Clifford), and Neill (Ruth), his sister-in-law Barbara Vadeboncoeur.
Gordon was born and raised in Watertown and Belmont, MA, graduating from Belmont High School. He earned both a BS in Chemical Engineering and an MS in Engineering Management from Northeastern University. Gordon served as a lieutenant in the US Army, stationed in Korea and several bases in the US.
Gordon had a long and successful career at Polaroid corporation, where he worked for 27 years as a Chemical Engineering Manager. Before and after retirement, he was an unwavering supporter of Donna's business, and he could often be found by her side at events and countless hours of show preparation. Gordon had many friends in their business community whose relationships he valued.
Gordon was an active member of the communities in which he lived, serving at Crawford Methodist Church and as a Winchester Town Meeting member for many years. He served on the Mousam Lake Association and coordinated the Sanford Racqueteers tennis group.
Gordon had many interests and was a quintessential handyman, enjoying the challenge of projects in many trades. He loved outdoor activities, especially sailing, and built his own catamaran and DN iceboat which he sailed with his daughters for many years, enjoying summers on Mousam Lake and winters on Lake Quannapowitt. An important highlight of his sailing days was volunteering as crew aboard the historic Boston ‘Pilot’ schooner, after it’s restoration. Gordon was an avid cyclist who explored countless miles of backroads in Southern Maine. Whether indoors, on the clay courts of Winchester or playing with his pals in Maine, he and his wife enjoyed playing tennis for decades. Gordon enjoyed walking daily, taking in the sights and sounds of nature. He was a voracious reader and was well known by the librarians in his communities.
Gordon will be remembered for his generous and helpful nature, his devotion to his family and his quick wit and kind heart. A graveside service will be held at Westview Cemetery, 520 Bedford Street, Lexington, MA, on Friday, May 19th at 10:00 AM. In lieu of flowers, donations in Gordon’s memory may be made to the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research
