Obituary for Edward Costello

Edward Costello, born July 24, 1963 in Staten Island, NY, passed away February 2, 2023 in North Reading at Royal Health MeadowView Nursing Home due to complications of Frontotemporal Degeneration Disease (FTD).

Edward was the devoted son of Joseph R. and Kathleen Costello of Osterville, MA. Ed, affectionately known as "Big Time", was the 5th of 8 children raised in an incredibly lively, loving and rambunctious household in Winchester, MA. In addition to his parents, Ed leaves behind his siblings Kathy McGinty (Bill) of Cotuit, Colleen Franzreb (Scott) of Osterville, Joseph (Wendy) of Lexington, Patrick (Joyce) of Winchester, Steven (Nancy) of Osterville, Chris (Kathleen) of Winchester and Dan (Brenna) of Reading. Big Time was also the uncle to 25 nieces and nephews and great uncle to 6. Ed’s entire extended Hannan clan from Staten Island and beyond grieve his loss as well.

Edward was a proud member of the United States Marine Corps. He had the privilege of being a United States Marine Embassy Guard, guarding US Embassies in Sanaa, Yemen, Okinawa, Japan and Nassau, Bahamas. While stationed in Nassau, Ed befriended his Marine house host Constance Burrows whom he cared for when she fell ill. Ed secured care for Connie in Boston without a second thought. Her extended Bahamian family of Arnetts and Adderleys are an extension of Ed and the entire Costello family because of Ed’s thoughtfulness, kindness and generosity.

Ed went on to become a very talented and extremely hardworking carpenter working alongside his brother Pat for many years at Costello Construction. Ed was diagnosed with FTD at the age of 52. Frontotemporal degeneration (FTD) is the most common form of dementia for people under the age of 60. It strikes in the prime of life, gradually eroding an individual’s personality.

One of Ed’s beloved cousins vocalized what we all believe to be true…”had Ed been given the choice, whether random assignment, pact with the devil, or prayer to God to let it be him to take on FTD and not anyone else in his family, like the true Marine hero he is, he’d have done so.”

Big Time was a gentle giant. He was a loyal friend who loved to laugh, cook, listen to good music, share inside jokes and ride his Harley. Ed’s lifelong friend John Saliba was listed as “Best Friend” under contacts. No name needed.
