Obituary for Amelio DiLeo

Amelio DiLeo of Winchester passed away peacefully on November 14, 2022. Amelio was born in Fallo, Abbruzzo Italy and immigrated with his family to Boston when he was a teenager. He had to learn English and graduated from Boston Technical High School and later received an associate’s degree while living in Brighton. Amelio then served in the US Army and was stationed in Germany. He was bright and mechanically inclined and had a thirty year career as an electrical draftsman at Draper Laboratories. Amelio worked on the electrical schematics for the guidance systems on the Apollo rocket missions and was always excited to meet the astronauts.

Amelio often skied and hiked in the White Mountains with his friends and met his first wife Audrey skiing. They married and settled in Wellesley and raised their two daughters Marianne and Susanne. He loved to play soccer as a child and he coached his daughter’s soccer teams. Some of Amelio’s most fond family memories were annual trips to Falmouth and North Conway. In mid-life when living in Medford he met and married Ida. They both enjoyed cooking Italian meals together and hosting delicious Sunday dinners with family until her death. He worked hard growing tomatoes in his garden annually and making homemade spaghetti sauce and pasta. Amelio had a passion for music, especially classical and opera and played guitar for his grandchildren, who called him Nonno.

He was an avid jogger and worked out daily at the MIT gym. Amelio was always extremely active and later in life met and married Theresa. They were married for 17 years. They would go to the gym three days a week up until age 86. They participated in dinner dances, day trips to the symphony and casinos. In their retirement they traveled to the warm destination islands of Aruba and Punta Cana.

Amelio fostered lifelong bonds with his brothers and childhood friends which included monthly lunches together.  He cherished the time when he could relax with friends and family while sipping a glass of red wine or espresso. He was a man who knew that family, friendship, kindness, and helping others was the key to happiness.   He truly made a positive impression on everyone he met and would brighten up anyone’s day. He will be greatly missed and always remembered by his large extended family and friends.

Beloved husband of Theresa L. (Timulty Sardella) DiLeo. Loving father of Marianne Purvis and her husband Greg of Burlington and Susanne Wasserboehr and her husband Rick of Natick.
